The Black Sabbath story began in Birmingham, England, where Ozzy Osborne, Tommy Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, were looking to escape a life of factory work through pursuing a career in music. Influenced by the popular British blues bands, the four of them formed Earth Blues Company in 1968.
Everything changed when the group composed a song, called Black Sabbath, based on a disturbing apparition that band member Butler had experienced. The song had a dark and disturbed sound, and the reaction from audiences was unlike anything before. They were then forced to change their name for copyright reasons and Black Sabbath was born.
The band is credited with creating heavy metal. The success of their first two albums, marked a significant shift in the world of rock. With their riff-based songs, extreme volume, and dark subject matter, the band embodied key aspects of the heavy metal style.
They released four genre-defining albums in a two-year period and their fifth album was also considered among their finest moments. The demanding pace of life on the road began catching up with the band in the mid-seventies and Ozzy Osborne quit in 1978.
The original foursome has reunited on a handful of occasions, including stadium shows back home in Birmingham in 1997 and for their farewell tour, The End, which included a date at the OVO Hydro in January 2017.
